Health Care

Health care reform did a lot for young Americans, but it didn't solve every problem. Perhaps the biggest area of work left undone is the status of college health plans.

Here's the deal. There is now a question as to whether student health plans at colleges will be subject to all the consumer protections promised by the health care law. Though the law explicitly states that schools may continue to offer plans, it is left unclear exactly how they are going to be regulated. And those regulations really matter: the bans on discrimination for pre-existing conditions and rescission, the minimum benefits requirements, and the limits on annual and lifetime benefit caps, are protections provided by the new law. But it is unclear whether those protections will also be available for student plans, to provide the same protections for students as to all other Americans.

About 4.5 million young Americans get their insurance through college health plans. They are a significant part of our health care safety net. YI is working on this issue now and we'll have more to say on it soon. In the meantime, we want to hear from you. Tell us where you go to school, whether or not you like your health insurance and what your school has told you health care reform will mean for your benefits.
